Shipping companies must report emissions
For the first time, shipping companies must enter their emissions of greenhouse gases in the Emissions Trading Registry by 31 March 2025.
All operators covered by the EU Emissions Trading System (stationary installations, aircraft operators and shipping companies) must submit an annual verified report on greenhouse gas emissions for the previous year to their competent/administering authority.
In addition, operators must enter verified emissions in the Emissions Trading Registry and have the quantity of emissions approved by a verifier.
Shipping companies are now covered by the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)
This spring, shipping companies are for the first time required to submit a verified emissions report (Company Emission Report) in THETIS-MRV and enter the verified quantity of emissions in the Emissions Trading Registry.
Operators must arrange for an accredited verifier to verify the emissions report. In addition, the verifier must have a verifier account and approve the emissions in the Emissions Trading Registry.
If the verified emissions have not been entered and approved by a verifier by the end of 31 March, the account will be blocked. This means that allowances cannot be transferred out of the account. As soon as the emissions have been approved by the verifier, the account will be opened.
